Our Schools – News in July

On the 18th July 2013 our kids at both schools, Happy Feet Creche and Aphilayo Amanzis decided to be creative as it was a little on the cold side for all the kids to be outside. In spite of the cold weather they have decided to put the pen on paper and see who can draw the most colourful and prettiest cake for Nelson Mandela. Just by mentioning that they will be making something for Nelson Mandela got them all excited and wanted to show how creative and talented they are can be.

Out of all the drawings we had a difficult task to choose one picture that we thought looked the best and gave the winner a small present just to show that we appreciate their effort. After they were finish with their drawings we were able to give each kid a nice glass of cool drink that Peninsula Beverage Company donated to them, we really appreciated it. As you all know that we have schools in Happy valley that the Blackheath City Improvement District support and tries to aid as best we can, but we won’t be able to be successful without your assistance.  Any form of donation i.e. pens, pencils, erasers, old story books, etc. are always welcome and all we ask for.  We try our best to help out where we can, but we can only do so much.  So if there is anything you have available or are able to gather around your office then please let me know at mark@bcid.co.za

If you want to keep up-to-date with what is happening at the schools we do weekly updates on the Facebook pages.  So visit https://www.facebook.com/AphilayoAmanzito see what is happening at the Grade R School (run and supported by Sing for Africa) or https://www.facebook.com/pages/Happy-Feet-Cr%C3%A8che/160881017258062 to keep in touch with the youngsters at the crèche who are fun-loving and filled with child-like wonder.

Acacia xanthophloea (Fever Trees) being damaged

image018All alongside Wimbledon and Buttskop Road we have planted these beautiful trees, as we going into autumn we can see that our trees are showing its powdery greenish-yellow colour. Just Interesting fact about the Fever tree is that it’s one of very few trees where photosynthesis takes place in the bark, the bark of tree can also be used for medical purposes as treating fever and eye complaints.

Also state that certain culture groups use it for rituals.

The bark of trees is there to cover and protect the vascular cambium of most trees. Inner bark is produced by the vascular cambium, but the protective function of bark as a whole is augmented by cell divisions in the cork cambium.

Over this past two weeks we have come across that people are busy damaging our precious trees by cutting of the bark, at this point we cannot confirm what it’s been used for, but research has showed that there are a number of things that it could be used for.

We ask for your participation to please be on the lookout for anyone that’s trying to damage the trees, if you have any information please contact us on 021 905 0929

Urban Maintenance in July 2013

Repairs

Over the past month we had several Street lights that were severely damaged, especially the one in front of The Wagon Burner in Buttskop Road.  Bollards are also one of our concerns! We have realised that people don’t understand the purpose of planting bollards, as many have been knocked over by large vehicles.   These measures have been installed to protect our infrastructure from being damaged by heavy vehicles.  The street lights have been and are constantly repaired and we trust that they will remain in good condition.  Please respect our assets, they are expensive and difficult to maintain and replace.  We would like the City to be spending money on new infrastructure within our area rather than on repairing damaged and vandalised infrastructure.

Landscaping on corner of Wimbledon and Buttskop Road

Over these past few weeks our cleansing and greening staff have been really busy upgrading the verge on the corner of Wimbledon and Buttskop Roads.  Many days of hard work were spent getting the whole area cleaned up and level in order to fill certain sections with stone and others with compost. At this point the major work has been completed and we are now busy planting foliage.

Verge Upgrades

The City of Cape Town is busy addressing infrastructure needs in Blackheath Industria by upgrading of sidewalks.  The Blackheath CID have prioritised this in our annual applications to Capital Budgets and the Integrated Development Plan for the City of Cape Town.  At this stage the implementation of the side walk alongside Wimbledon road is in its final stage and should be completed shortly.  With the new financial year and BCID budget the Blackheath CID is also looking at the upgrade of various verges at other intersections in our area.  More news to follow on this at a later stage though!

VODACOM SIGNAL

Ms Kathryn Adshade from the Pallet Supply Company contacted us with concerns about the poor cell phone signal at their premises in Wimbledon Road.  She reports that on contacting the Vodacom help desk on 082 110, they were quick to respond and did an inspection at the premises.  A weak signal was proved and Vodacom offered to install a type of signal boosting device at the premises, although they were clear to report that only one such device may be installed per premises.

If you are experiencing similar difficulties with your Vodacom signal, you may want to follow a similar route.  Kathryn is also happy to assist with a survey and we will therefore initiate this later in the month.  Her contact details will be included at this time.

News in July 2013

Wow!  How time flies!  We have now officially moved into the second half and third quarter of 2013.  What a year it has been for development within the local area.  The Happy Valley formal housing development, the New Home Choice Development, the Busmark 2000 Development, the Maxman / Heritage Castings development, the new extensions to Goosebumps Factory in Range Road.  Belgotex relocated to Nebula Crescent, we welcomed DB Schenker to Rand Road in their place.  GR Building & Steel relocated to the new Kwela Park where we see new development.  Then there is much in the form of new interest and new property acquisitions in the local area.

My apology to those I have not mentioned in this brief summary, please feel free to invite us to feature your company and any related developments or issues to brag about in our next Newsletter?

New development also means new infrastructure.  There were upgrades to Wimbledon Road, road repairs in Range Road and various other infrastructure developments throughout the area.

We are happy to say that the BCID has just completed its annual financial audit.  The Directors signed off the Annual Audited Financial Statements last week.  Now all that remains is the arranging of our Annual General Meeting where we report back to members and agree on our Implementation Plan and Budget for the next financial year.  The date for this meeting was set at a recent meeting of the Directors for the 02nd of October 2013.  All details of this meeting will be forwarded separately.

We are and remain the best run and most successful City Improvement District of the 27 registered City Improvement Districts in the Cape Metropolitan Area.  We are proud to be committed to making a difference in the Blackheath Industrial Area!

NEWSFLASH! Winter Preparedness Programme

The City of Cape Town has rolled out its Winter Preparedness Programme in anticipation of the coming winter season – rain, sleet and snow (although not as much snow).  Blackheath has not been left out.  The last few weeks has seen the council flattening and hardening the gravel verges and clearing the storm water canals throughout the area.Grass has been cut, trees have been trimmed and drains have been cleared to prevent flooding of roads and keep the area as neat and safe as possible.  With the wet and windy weather we don’t want any vegetation or infrastructure to struggle. If you see anything that needs attention or any problems that need to be urgently addressed then please contact us at (021) 905 0929 or email bcid@kingsley.co.za.

Cleared Canals in Blackheath

Astrosec

We have a new “big brother” coming to town as Astrosec sets its sights on Blackheath. Situated on the corner of Wimbledon Road and Heath Circle, a new control room is being set up to act as Astrosec’s eyes and ears for its new security operations.

The control room will enable Atrosec to offer a wide range services to prospective clients; i.e. monitor procedure, processes, staff and guard replacement.  What does this mean? Simply it means a reduced need for expensive security guards, but rather a system that can be monitored and operate from a central, off-site location. It utilises alarmed event monitoring which means that the displays in the control room are blank until an alarm is raised that will in turn trigger the specific camera(s).  The required actions are then taken as prescribed by the client, and if an audio system is available then the control room operator can make use of direct communication to speak to the perpetrator – just let them know “Big Brother is watching!”

The operators themselves are specifically trained to use these monitoring systems / techniques and extract information from feeds in accordance with client requests.  The system is not only used for monitoring and ‘checking-up’ on sites, but can be used very effectively when communicating with armed response – informing them of crimes in progress.  Thus the operators have to be wide awake and ever vigilant.  The best part?  The building has been designed specifically to accommodate staff suffering disabilities.  Giving opportunities and experience to those who would otherwise be at a disadvantage.
